南韓媒體今晚引用美國警方消息報導，美國維吉尼亞理工學院槍殺案的主嫌犯是持有美國「綠卡」的韓國籍學生。（王長偉 首爾報導）

南韓「聯合通訊社」和第一大報導「朝鮮日報」等媒體以快報方式報導，這名持有韓國的國籍學生，韓國名字叫「趙承輝」。

美國警方初步調查，趙承輝在初中的時候，就移民到美國，並擁有美國「綠卡」，並居住在校內的宿舍。

根據美國警方發表聲明指出，美國維吉尼亞理工大學，就讀英文學科四年級的韓裔學生趙承輝（Cho Seung Hui）是該校園槍殺案的主謀。

美國警方初步調查，二十三歲的趙承輝，是於今年三月購入9mm口徑的槍枝。他在持槍殺害三十多人之後，自己飲彈自盡。美國警方在宣佈美國維吉尼亞理工大學槍殺案的主嫌犯是持有美國「綠卡」的韓國的國籍的學生之後，美國主要媒體做了詳盡而快速的報導，也震驚了南韓。

趙承熙美國警察正式公布，16日在弗吉尼亞理工大學發生的美國歷史上最慘重的校園槍擊案的嫌疑犯系23歲韓裔學生趙承熙（音譯）。弗吉尼亞理工大學警長17日公布，槍擊案犯罪嫌疑人是擁有美國永久居住權的23歲韓國人。

据悉，趙承熙在他上小學時移民到美國，現在是弗吉尼亞理工大學英文系4年級學生。警方說，嫌疑犯趙承熙身份證上的地址在弗吉尼亞州Centerville，他一直在該校的宿舍里生活。

華盛頓郵報网絡版17日報道說，嫌疑犯的父母住在弗吉尼亞州Fairfax。該地區位于華盛頓哥倫比亞特區（Washington D.C.）附近，是許多韓裔居住的地方。

韓國外交部從美國方面接到有關嫌疑犯的個人信息后，17日下午召開了緊急對策會議。

Cho Seung-Hui was born in South Korea and emigrated to the United States as an 8-year-old child with his parents in September 1992. [5] According to Virginia Tech, Cho was an undergraduate student in his senior year as an English major. He was a South Korean national but was a permanent legal resident of the United States,[6] and had a permanent address listed in Centreville, Virginia, an unincorporated community in western Fairfax County located within the Washington Metropolitan Area[7].

His family currently resides in Virginia where they run a dry-cleaning business,[7][8] and Cho was living on campus in Harper Residence Hall at the time of his death.[9]

According to reports, Cho left a "disturbing note" criticizing "rich kids", "debauchery", and "deceitful charlatans" before killing two people in a dormitory room.[8] Two hours later, he then crossed the campus to continue his rampage in a classroom building.[4] Police identified Cho by matching fingerprints on the guns used in the shootings with immigration materials.[4] The words "Ismail Ax" were found inscribed on his arm in red ink. [8] Officials have described finding a March purchase receipt for a Glock 9mm [8] used in the assault[10] and note that permanent residents in Virginia may legally purchase firearms with proof of residency.[11]

University spokesman Larry Hincker called Cho a "loner" and said university officials were having a hard time finding information about him.[12] For example, Virginia Tech students of Korean descent report that Cho rarely joined in the activities of Korean campus clubs. [13]

Cho committed suicide after the shootings on April 16, 2007.
