Yankees land Wilson from Pirates for Chacon

The Yankees remained busy leading up to Monday's 4 p.m. ET trade deadline, landing slugging Pirates outfielder Craig Wilson in exchange for right-hander Shawn Chacon. Wilson hit .267 with 11 doubles, 13 home runs and 41 RBIs in 85 games with the Pirates.

Cubs land Izturis, send Maddux to LA

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs have agreed to deal Greg Maddux to the Los Angeles Dodgers for infielder Cesar Izturis, and have sent infielder Todd Walker to the San Diego Padres for a Minor League pitcher.
The Maddux-Izturis deal was pending approval by Major League Baseball, sources said.

Maddux, 40, was pursued by Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti, who was a Cubs official during the right-hander's first stint in Chicago. Maddux is 9-11 with a 4.69 ERA this season, and has a career record of 327-200 and a 3.06 ERA.

The Hall of Fame-bound pitcher had to approve the deal; he had a no-trade clause in his contract with the Cubs, which was to pay him $9 million this year.

The four-time Cy Young winner has won his last two starts, beating the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Mets. In his last game, he gave up one run on five hits over six innings while striking out six.

In Maddux's last start Saturday at Wrigley Field, he tipped his cap to the crowd which gave him a standing ovation as he was pulled in the seventh. Maybe he knew it was goodbye.

"I love pitching here," Maddux said after that game. "I don't know what's going to happen but I wanted to say, 'Thank you' and let them know I appreciate it."

"I'm not interested in getting rid of Greg Maddux because of his salary or because he may not be back next year," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said last week. "He's earned the right to do what he wants to do."

Izturis, who has primarily played third this year, was batting .252 in 32 games with seven doubles, one homer and 12 RBIs.

The Cubs could move shortstop Ronny Cedeno to second and put Izturis at short.

The Cubs also dealt Walker to the San Diego Padres for Minor League pitcher Jose Ceda on Monday. Ceda, 19, was 4-2 with a 1.50 ERA in 13 games for the Padres' Dominican Summer League Team in 2005. He limited opponents to a .174 batting average against, while striking out 83 in 60 innings.

This year, Ceda was playing for the Padres' Arizona League club, and he was 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA (four earned runs in 18 innings) over six games.

Walker, 33, was batting .277 in 94 games with 16 doubles, six homers and 40 RBIs. The left-handed hitting infielder stepped in at first base for injured Derrek Lee for two months, making 35 starts, but has played more games at second (46). Sunday's 6-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals was his last game for the Cubs.

"Things go through your mind a little bit -- you're only human," Walker said after the game as to whether he felt nostalgic. "You want to feel wanted, but at the same time, I understand that it's a business. At this point, I don't know what's going to happen so I can't worry too much about it."

The Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals to post their first four-game sweep of the Redbirds since July 29-31, 1972.

"I can't say enough good things about the people who come out to Wrigley Field," Walker said. "It'd be a good thing if I were to stay."
