SCHUYLER, N.Y. At least one dozen cars broke down on the state Thruway after filling their gas tanks up at a central New York rest area.
Twelve cars so far have experience problems and stalled out shortly after leaving the Sunoco gas station at the Schuyler rest area in the westbound lane between Herkimer and Utica. Sunoco is helping the affected drivers, and in some case have arranged people to stay overnight.

Officials say the regular unleaded gas was apparently tainted, although they are still investigating what specifically was wrong with the fuel.

Some stations are reporting that diesel fuel may have been accidentally loaded into the pumps. W-K-T-V channel 2 of Utica reports they've been informed the gas may have been tainted with water and sludge.

Officials hope to reopen the station fully soon, but for now, only premium unleaded fuel is available.
