第一樂章:作曲者自己敘述第1樂章開頭部分說：「要像鷲鳥在極為寒冷而晴朗透澈的北方天空悠然滑翔.」第二樂章:是一首浪漫曲風格的音樂. 芬蘭的指揮家賽格斯坦（Leif Segerstam）認為這個樂章描寫男女最崇高而神秘的行為, 而英國的女小提琴家泰絲敏莉朵(TasminLittle)也很端莊的表示贊同. 這樂章極為傑出, 是西貝流士所寫的最獨創又最高貴的徐緩樂章.第三樂章:由活潑有力的兩個主題構成自由輪旋曲式。由小提琴奏出切分音的第一主題有些粗曠，因此音樂學者Donald Francis Tovey戲稱這「顯然是北極熊的波蘭舞曲」。樂團引進的第二主題交替運用6/8和3/4節拍。接近尾聲時小提琴以精彩的八度大跳展現絕技。這個樂章技巧相當困難，可能是所有小提琴協奏曲中最偉大的段落。
