I wish to acknowledge that Starker's Bach Cello Suites in Mercury's Living Presence series was never awarded as Super Disc list by TAS. Though it was recorded during Golden Era of Music.
To: Rachmaninov
Casals (HMV, known as EMI, Mono)
Fournier (Archiv Produktion & Philips)
Ma (Columbia & Sony)
Starker (Mercury & RCA)
Maisky (Deutche Grammophon)
Rostropovich (EMI, stereo)
Rostropovich's recording was known as the best sounding of Bach's Cello Suites on CD format at that day ... my opinion ... YES! Until Sony Classics re-issued Bylsma w/ its 20 bit technology.
Regarding to Starker's Mercury ... I think that was and still a good sounding limited on vinyl format only.
