Glavine wins seventh straight decision

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PHILADELPHIA -- Tom Glavine keeps hearing about his age. It hasn't affected his pitching.

The Braves' Gary Sheffield is plunked twice Thursday, including this one by the Phillies' Dave Coggin in the fourth inning.

Glavine tossed seven shutout innings and Vinny Castilla homered and drove in three runs, leading the Atlanta Braves to a 6-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night.

Glavine (2-0) allowed three hits and lowered his ERA to 0.89. He won his seventh straight decision, going back to last season.

"Everybody is talking so much about my age," said Glavine, who turned 36 last month. "But my style of pitching isn't going to change. I'm not going to wake up one day and not be able to throw 95. It's about understanding what you have on a given night and using it."

Braves manager Bobby Cox isn't sure if he has seen Glavine pitch any better.

"He's throwing well, pitching the same as he always has," Cox said. "He's right on target. His control is even better now than it has been, if that's possible."

Phillies starter David Coggin (0-1) gave up five runs and five hits in five innings.

B.J. Surhoff's RBI double in the second gave the Braves a 1-0 lead.

Marcus Giles' bases-loaded single in the fourth drove in Surhoff, and Castilla came around to score when Pat Burrell dropped the ball in left to make it 3-0.

Catcher Mike Lieberthal made an outstanding, headfirst diving catch on a bunt attempt by Glavine with one out and runners on second and third, preventing further damage.

Castilla's two-run shot to center in the fifth gave the Braves a 5-0 lead. He added an RBI single in the seventh.

"Glavine is like a painter out there," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "You don't mind hitting off him, but at the end of the night, you're 0-for-3."

Scott Rolen and Lieberthal had RBI singles off Tim Spooneybarger in the eighth. Darren Holmes retired Burrell and Dave Hollins with two runners on to end the rally.

Holmes pitched the ninth for his first save since 2000 for Arizona on opening day. He missed all of last season while recovering from back surgery.

"It's something you hope for, to get another opportunity," Holmes said.

Glavine set down nine straight batters after walking Marlon Anderson in the first. After walking Jimmy Rollins with two outs in the sixth, he gave up a double to Anderson, but got Rolen on a grounder to third to end the inning.

"I felt really good in the bullpen," Glavine said. "My movement was great, kept the ball in and out and changed speeds as much as I could."

Coggin will likely be sent to the bullpen when Randy Wolf comes off the disabled list Friday.

"I didn't do very well to prove to the coaching staff that I should be a starter," Coggin said.
