Kiko Wu

New York, June 6th 2001

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Kiko Wu makes official statement on the remarks made by Ms. Chen during her May 6th press conference.

New York, June 6th 2001

While I regret that Ms. Chen found my images objectionable I can comfortably say that hers is the only negative response I have received so far. The human body is a beautiful thing and provided you are not hurting anyone it is nothing to be ashamed of. The images I shot while in Taipei represent less then .5% of my website and almost no money. They are mostly of interest to Taiwanese and most Taiwanese simply steal the images and email them to their friends- very few actually pay. The assertion that I sell VCDs in Taiwan is simply an outright lie. If Ms. Chen would like to prove otherwise she is welcome to produce the offending VCD- there are none in existence.

I was extremely careful about shooting the images. There were no children present during any of my shoots and I have the video footage to prove it. I only shot during school hours to insure that I was not seen by any children and despite many, many requests I absolutely refused to shoot near any Memorials or Buddhist shrines. I have too much respect for the Taiwanese culture and people to do that.

It is unfortunate that Ms. Chen would resort to waving my pictures in front of the TV in an attempt to distract the Taiwanese from the very real issues they face. I can only wonder, does she truly imagine that this is the most important issue facing women in Taiwan at the moment? Perhaps she thinks that all the Barber Shops in Taipei just cut hair? Or that all of the 16 year old girls walking around Hsimenting in the evenings are just shopping? There are thousands of Taiwanese women who are forced by unemployment conditions to put food on the table in far worse ways then I do. Where is their voice? Their "voice" it seems is too busy worrying about one American to champion the cause of those thousands of Taiwanese women.

Perhaps if she climbed down from her high perch a little more often and saw how real Taiwanese- not just the privilege few, live work and play she would understand why my pictures were so appealing. Her press conference on this "serious problem" simply served as an embarrassing advertisement to how out of touch she is with her constituency.

I shudder to think of the real crimes that will go unpunished and unsolved while Ms. Chen has called the police away from their rightful duties. All in a fruitless attempt to apprehend a dangerous menace to society in the form of a 41 kilogram Chinese girl. Truly Ms. Chen is a leader who knows how to use her power wisely.

Since Ms. Chen seems inclined to dispense a little Mainland style justice at my expense, I will not unfortunately be able to meet with her back in Taiwan. If she ever finds herself here in New York however I would consider it an honor to dine with her so we could discuss our differences.
