人的口腔本來就是一堆細菌，有好菌壞菌。加上口水分泌也會產生細菌，口腔黏膜也會分泌黏液也都含有細菌，怎麼做都無法讓整個口腔都無菌。一個橡皮障是絕對無法隔離細菌的，要將根管內的細菌給消除通常牙醫師會注入殺菌劑到根管內，再用消水酒精吸乾水分，之後再把馬來膠樹脂填入根管缺口達到密封來避免細菌入侵，這才是正規的消毒作法。橡皮障的功能不懂的話可以多請教牙醫師或是上知名牙醫診所所開闢的線上解說網頁就都有很詳細的說明了。

One of the primary objectives of endodontic treatment is disinfection of the root canal system. Only dental dam isolation minimizes the risk of contamination of the root canal system by indigenous oral bacteria. The dental dam also offers other benefits, such as aiding in visualization by providing a clean operating field and prevent ingestion or aspiration of dental materials, irrigants and instruments.
