癡迷Kuro電漿畫質的友人,在美Bestbuy目睹LG W-OLED TV的live demo後,轉為OLED的粉絲,雖然仍是阮囊羞澀,負擔不起8000鎂的奢華花費。僅是W-OLED已如此驚艷,不難想像RGB OLED的震撼。

OLED技術的瓶頸在中小尺寸上主要是精細化,而在大尺寸上卻是面積問題。IGZO跟LTPS都能當OLED背板,也都能成為LCD產品,前者強在成本,後者強在效能。但說實話,在影像品質上,受限於背光源,LED-based LCD基本上無法匹敵OLED,或許新一代的量子點背光源有機會一搏。即便如斯,正仰賴LCD掙錢的LGD可還認為organic light-emitting diode technology will be the future of the television industry!

LG Display has “confidence” in OLED, emphasizing that it still believes OLED is the future of display, citing OLED‟s competitive edge over LCD, in terms of:
1) the ability to display deep black levels (superior to quantum-dot BLU-lit LCD in gradation);
2) the POL-less technology, which enhances panel efficiency, reduces electricity consumption and gives OLED the upper hand in rollable display; and
3) the potential to manufacture panels more cost efficiently than LCD, thanks to mass production and a drop in organic material prices [...]
We share LGD‟s optimism over OLED. Apart from its technological advantages over LCD, OLED can lower the unit manufacturing costs of panels. This is because:
1) OLED does not need expensive components, such as BLU; and
2) while organic material prices are currently higher than liquid crystal prices, due to low demand, this should change once OLED is mass-produced. Nevertheless, we think it will take some time for OLED to secure a competitive edge over LCD, in terms of price, due to delays in mass production by competitors.

大公司如Apple,在決定產品規格上,會有多面向的綜合考量,絕非單一因素;是否校色問題,不得而知。不過,從Samsung跟LG對OLED的投入來看,效能毋庸置疑,困擾他們的都是成本問題,相信對Apple而言亦然。我倒是認為,若OLED售價跟LCD一樣,Apple是蠻樂見的。今日LCD的廉價不就是眾多廠家前仆後繼的功德嗎?

中國面板產業的發展,更多的是國家政策的貫徹,而非市場因素;換言之,獲利與否,已在其次。全面扶植中國的ICT產業,扎根基礎,擺脫外援,這已是公開的秘密,否則BOE何以撐到至今?

DRAM是周期性產業,三年不開張,開張吃三年,力晶有今朝,未必有明天。倒是這些無能的集團CEO們,績效不彰,卻有一套手法保住自己的集團主導地位,才是其核心競爭力。
