不是這樣, 每州都有不同的排氣法規
以最嚴格的加州來說, 早期加州政府凍結了排氣法規的年分, 1975 或更早以前製造的車子都不用做排氣檢查, 後來政府於 2004 有提出修正法規當車齡超過 30 年的車也不用做排氣檢查, 前者後者的理由都是車齡超過 30 年已經沒有零件, 而且級大部分都已報廢, 政府不需要浪費精力去追查這些車子, 但是後者修正法一直到現在都還沒通過投票. 所以很多人會買 1975 年以前的車, 只要車體與引擎年份在行照上顯示是不超過 1976 年, 無論你怎樣大改, 甚至換引擎, 都不用做排氣檢查, 警察抓你也不能要求你去做排氣檢查 (話說沒有搜索票你是不用理警察, 他不能看你車內任何東西)
然而美國其他州的排氣檢查都沒有加州嚴格.... 所以當然會看到更多大改的車子, 德州最為瘋狂. 像是加州只有 Nissan R35 是唯一 Skyline 系列可以上路的, 但在別州都可以看到 R34 R33 R32 在路上跑.

Currently, smog inspections are required for all vehicles except diesel powered vehicles 1997 year model and older or with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs, electric, natural gas powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs, hybrids, motorcycles, trailers, or gasoline powered vehicles 1975 and older.

例外車種為: 1997年型和更早的, 或是超過車輛總重一萬四千磅的柴油動力車輛. 超過車輛總重一萬四千磅的電力, 天然氣動力車. 混和動力, 摩托車, 拖車, 或是1975年型和更早的汽油動力車
一般車輛若是沒去做檢查,交牌照費時會不接受收費並收不到DMV核發年度牌照貼紙
