EA axes Medal of Honor series
Electronic Arts has decided to pull the pin and dive on the grenade that is its Medal of Honor series.
The decision to scrap the iconic franchise comes after 2012』s Medal of Honor: Warfighter failed to find success with critics or sales. The title was widely panned by critics – 3news.co.nz awarded it one and a half stars.
「Medal of Honor was an obvious miss. The game was solid, but the focus on combat authenticity did not resonate with consumers,」 says EA chief operating officer Peter Moore.
「Critics were polarised and gave the game scores which were, frankly, lower than it deserved.」
Moore added that EA will now focus on 「plan to bring year-over-year continuity to our shooter offerings」.
Medal of Honor was EA's first real commercial success in the first-person shooter genre and was widely regarded as the premiere game in the PSX era. The franchise was benched in 2007 but returned for a second tour of duty in 2010 with Medal of Honor and last year's follow-up Medal of Honor: Warfighter.
Both were released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and into military first-person shooter markets that proved to be dominated too strongly by two major franchises: Activision's Call of Duty and fellow EA-owned Battlefield.
「We're a hit-driven business where it's about what you can build in a certain period of time and really deliver for the marketplace, and frankly we missed on Medal of Honor,」 says EA Labels president Frank Gibeau.
