On the anti-communist side, South Korea had the second-largest contingent of foreign troops in South Vietnam after the United States. In November 1961, Park Chung Hee proposed South Korean participation in the war to John F. Kennedy, but Kennedy disagreed.[250] On 1 May 1964 Lyndon Johnson requested South Korean participation.[250] The first South Korean troops began arriving in 1964 and large combat battalions began arriving a year later, with the South Koreans soon developing a reputation for effectiveness. Indeed arguably, they conducted counterinsurgency operations so well that American commanders felt that Korean area of responsibility was the safest.[251]
Approximately 320 thousand South Korean soldiers were sent to Vietnam,[252] each serving a one year tour of duty. Maximum troop levels peaked at 50 thousand in 1968, however all were withdrawn by 1973.[253] About five thousand South Koreans were killed and 11 thousand were injured during the war. South Korea claimed they killed 41 thousand Viet Congs.[252] United States paid South Korean soldiers USD 236 million for their service in Vietnam,[252] and South Korean GNP increased five-fold during the war.[252]

At the request of the United States, President Park Chung Hee of the Republic of Korea agreed to send military units into Vietnam, despite opposition from both the Assembly and the public. In exchange, the United States agreed to provide additional military funds to Korea to modernize its armed forces, totaling about a billion dollars.
The three main units deployed to Vietnam were the Marine Corps’ Cheongryeong ('Blue Dragon', 청룡/靑龍) Brigade, ROKA Capital Division and the White Horse Division. Various ROK special forces units were also deployed.
The Republic of Korea Army units' Tactical Area of Responsibility were the southern half of the I Corps. The ROK Marines were deployed with the I Corps alongside US Marines.
