Pastor Maldonado has been handed a five-place grid penalty for his part in a dramatic incident with McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton in Belgium this afternoon. The Williams driver appeared to retaliate after touching wheels with his rival in the final stages of Q2, resulting in the stewards' decision that does not affect Hamilton's starting position.

During a mad rush to set times on a drying surface in the second phase of qualifying, Hamilton made contact with Maldonado at the Bus Stop Chicane when making his way to the start/finish line. This provoked the latter to swerve in front of Hamilton after La Source on the next lap, littering debris over the circuit before Eau Rouge.

The pair had previously collided at Monte-Carlo back in May, with Maldonado being taken out of the race following contact with the 2008 Champion. The Venezuelan said 'he didn't know what happened' when questioned about this afternoon's clash after qualifying, but the penalty sees him fall to 21st on the grid.
