Johnson身高206cm，體重100公斤。在1979年以第一輪第一位入選NBA洛杉磯湖人隊。在他加入湖人隊的第一個賽季就幫助球隊奪得1980年的NBA總冠軍。

Johnson從小就入迷似地苦練籃球，在他上中學的時候，就因為出色的籃球技術被當地報紙的記者稱為“魔術師Magic”，以至後人忘了他的真實名字Earvin Johnson，而“Magic Johnson”代之。

He won a championship and an NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award in his rookie season, and won four more championships with the Lakers during the 1980s.

Johnson was first dubbed "Magic" as a 15-year-old sophomore playing for Lansing's Everett High School, when he recorded a triple-double of 36 points, 18 rebounds and 16 assists.[4] After the game, Fred Stabley Jr., a sports writer for the Lansing State Journal, gave him the moniker[11] despite the belief of Johnson's mother, a Christian, that the name was sacrilegious.
