Raikkonen set for NASCAR debut

Former Grand Prix World Champion Kimi Raikkonen will make his NASCAR debut at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 20 – but he says that it won't interfere with his rally commitments.

The Finn is contesting 10 rounds of the World Rally Championship in a Citroen DS3 WRC run by his own Ice 1 Racing team. Now, he is looking to add to his motorsport programme with selected outings on the NASCAR Truck Series: the same route into the main NASCAR series that was followed by Raikkonen's fellow F1 refugees Jacques Villeneuve and Juan Pablo Montoya.

The path to NASCAR is traditionally not an easy one, with even two-time Indy Car champion Dario Franchitti having struggled when he moved into America's most popular racing series.

「I'm really looking forward to getting there to become more familiar with the world of NASCAR,」 said the 2007 Formula One World Champion. 「I know that it's a very tough and open series, but it will be great fun for me. I love the American spirit of racing and it feels great to get involved in that.」

Ice 1 Racing will run Raikkonen's NASCAR truck in conjunction with American businessman Foster Gillett.
