就以水面艦來說
主機(供應動力)會有1"2"3"4號~電機會有1"2"3"4號~鍋爐1"2"3"4號鍋爐~及~左舵機右舵機~左俥右俥~空調1"2"3"4"號
出航並不會使用全部的裝備.通常會使用部分的裝備.短航就一次到底.遠航就交替使用
如果運作中的裝備發生問題(或超過一定時數).將由待命中裝備來接替
裝備不會隨便啟動或關閉.會有一定的作業程序做接替
潛艦在水下更是危險如果只有單一的動力來源哪後果.....更是可想而知

通常反應爐的設計會是機密, 不過, 回到我之前說的, 你水面艦空間不是啥大問題, 航艦就有配置2~4 個反應爐,但是潛艦就那麼一點空間, 你要塞幾個反應爐?
當然也因為潛艦只有一個反應爐, 所以有嚴格的多重安全保護, 民用的反應爐跟軍用的比起來, 就像march跟F1賽車的等級差距...
潛艦上的反應爐通常不會全速運轉, 第一求安靜, 第二也就是像你說的, 算是半待命,
不過通常則會有多部汽輪機
