This is a widely spread problem with Dell flat panel monitors.

The problem is that the EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) on your monitor is corrupt. The problem only effects the DVI connection, so a temporary fix is to use the VGA connector instead. Dell has released a fix called DVI_recover.exe but it only will run on computers with an Nvidia card. Running this patch on a system with an ATI card leads to an DDC Channel access error. If anyone knows how to get this fix to run on a system with an ATI card - please let me know!

There is likely NO problem with your drivers, cable, power-supply, etc - so don't let anyone talk you into replacing/reinstalling. Until you fix the EDID corruption you will experience this problem with the DVI connection.

This is a Dell specific problem and Dell has not yet fully addressed it.
