惡性腫瘤是目前國人死因的第一位，每年約有33,000人死於惡性腫瘤，佔總死亡率的26%。其中肺癌又佔惡性腫瘤死因的第一位，每年約有6,500人死於肺癌，佔所有惡性腫瘤約20%。
肺癌的致病因子有兩部份，一是不可改變的，如性別、種族差異等；另一個為可改變的，如抽煙、二手煙、職業暴露、空氣污染及身體已存在之肺部疾病等。
大多數的肺癌患者都是非特異性的胸部症狀，如咳嗽、體重減輕、呼吸困難、胸痛、咳血、發燒等，進一步的鑑別診斷需靠儀器的輔助，最常見的診斷工具有胸部X光攝影、痰液細胞學檢查、電腦斷層攝影、支氣管鏡檢、肺功能檢查。
在病理學的分類上，肺癌主要分為小細胞癌及非小細胞癌；前者約佔15%，而後者又可依發生多寡，再依序分成腺癌、鱗狀細胞癌、極大細胞癌。小細胞癌對化學治療的感受性良好，故其治療以化學治療為主，放射線治療為輔；而非小細胞肺癌的治療，早期病患以手術治療為主，化學治療及放射治療為輔，晚期病患則以化學治療及放射治療為主。
因肺癌的症狀多不具有特異性，所以若有久咳不癒、聲音沙啞、不明原因的體重減輕、痰中帶血絲、胸痛等症狀，務必尋求胸腔專科醫師的協助，以釐清病情。要遠離肺癌，最重要的是自己不抽煙、不吸二手煙、避免職場上的污染。年逾40歲者應每年至少照一次胸部及痰液檢查，方能早期診斷，早期治療。
