Here's a funny story for you, it might have something to do with the whole 'Taiwaner' business, or it might not..
The aborigines in New Zealand call themselves Maori, and whenever they come across a whiteman, they would call him "pakeha".
White people wanting to befriend with these natives learnt these phrases too, and started calling themselves pakeha and would refer to the aborigines as Maori.
However, little did they know in Maori language, Maori actually meant "normal" and Pakeha; white.
