As surprising as the overall performances of Johnson and Pavano have been, the Yankees have been equally surprised by Wang's superb rookie season. Wang has helped fill the void left by Wright, who has spent most of the year on the disabled list with a shoulder injury.

"He's unusual in the fact that he's very calm for a young pitcher," Torre said. "He's been as consistent as anybody all year. He's probably been the most consistent starter on our staff."
