Actually, reporters at CNN don't have any British accent, they still speak in standard American English. I think the reason why students in Taiwan can't realize the CNN news report is perhaps the way of thinking. Even if our students may understand every word the reporters say, they may have difficulties in putting words together, because they still try to translate those sentences into Chinese, while next sentence comes up quickly before our students figure out the meanings of the previous sentences. In other words, it has very little to do with accent, the important issue is to think in English. I totally agree that thinking in English, but I consider British accent is really a huge problem for those one who have learned US accent for years in Taiwan.
Maybe it's not a trouble to you but those one are in poor listening comprehension won't get it.
By the way, maybe you have no idea that CNN in Taiwan is CNN Asia, rather CNN in US. They are totally different, do you understand?
