即使 AMD 買下 DEC, 但 x86 本來就是個人電腦主流是事實, x86 會活到現在, 一個最重要的目標就是相容性. 沒人希望買你的 CPU 結果不能跑, 或是要靠模擬器跑, 那增加的頻率還補不了效能的減低.
P4 的同時脈效能比 P3 差, 是差在模擬 x86 層, 這一點就是代價. 至於認為 x86 又臭又長, 大多數了解的人也都這麼認為, 只不過 x86 活到現在, 是必要的, 也無法割除.

AMD 從沒買下過 DEC 吧？
但是 DEC 被 Compaq 合併後
不少研發人員四散各地 Intel, AMD 等有名的公司當然都是他們落腳之處
而有人說 athlon 和 Alpha 為何那麼類似
幕後黑手 就是 原DEC 的 Dirk Meyer (暱稱 Dark Mayer 哈哈)
他也待過 Intel, 大概是不得志吧
P4 不算是模擬 x86 啦
它就是一顆 x86 cpu
你沒辦法用它檯面下的 micro-op 寫程式吧？
他的架構就是拼時脈
也不能說它比較遜 (不算 power 的話)
p3 和 k7 都沒法出到 3GHz 的版本吧
不得不佩服 Intel 的設計人員和半導體工程師
雖然後來還是踢到鐵板...
用的爽最重要

Dirk Meyer is Group Vice President and General Manager of AMD's Computation Products Group. From 1996 through 1998 he was director and lead architect of the AMD Athlon processor program. He joined AMD in 1996 from Digital Equipment Corporation where he was co-architect of the Alpha 21064 and 21264 microprocessors. He has 19 years of microprocessor design experience at AMD, Digital and Intel, where he has been involved in the design of x86, Alpha, VAX and embedded processors. He has a B.S. in Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois, and an MBA from Boston University. |
