Hitachi-LG Data Storage Factory Goes Up In Flames
7:43 PM CST Posted By: Ian
DigiTimes has reported that one of Hitachi-LG Data Storage's factories was damaged in a fire. While the extent of the damage isn't known, it's expected that it will significantly impact production of their optical storage drives.
The Hitachi-LG Data Storage (HLDS) factory in Huizhou, Guangdong Province (China), was severely damaged by fire, recently, according to various China newspapers.
The fire should significantly affect HLDS’ ability to deliver fourth-quarter orders for optical disc drives (ODDs), a traditional peak-sale period. As a result, Taiwan ODD makers may receive unexpected orders since major OEMs, such as Dell and Hewlett-Packard (HP), will transfer orders from HLDS, Taiwan ODD makers indicated.
HLDS’ Huizhou factory is part of an LG Electronics’ plant. The plant was completed two months ago and consists of a few 3-story buildings that occupy an area of 20,000 square meters. Although the details of the damage caused by the fire are not yet available, most of the products and equipment inside the factory buildings were destroyed, according to local newspapers.
The HLDS Huizhou factory produces CD-ROM drives, CD-RW burners, DVD-ROM drives and Combo drives for use in desktop and notebook PCs, as well as DVD recorders. The factory was supposed to gradually begin producing DVD burners, which are currently produced at HLDS’ Malaysia factory, the makers explained.
This is definitely a tough break for Hitachi and LG. Hopefully they'll be able to recover. If you'd like to read more, the entire article is available at DigiTimes.
