I guess you never work in the US industry before.....
1. Nothing is impossible here. I also don't understand what you mean for the short future. 1 year, 3 year, or 5 year?.........
If you want to work here only for a short future. You don't have to move your family here.
2. There is no important development here. There is only profitable development in USA. Cutting cost is a key for R & D profit control. (一年花的要比一年少) Believe or not!!! Why they are doing outsourcing? Because the cost in here is too high! They pay you 80K per year. In china, they only need to pay 8K per year. If you are the CEO, what you gonna to do?
3. So far now there is no law which restricts those company who outsurcing their project to other countri...

Hi Johnny,
I completely agree on what you said. Engineering is a dead end. I was considering to quite the field with my wife and start something new in Taiwan. Old engineers just cannot work like new fresh engineers out of school.
There are more than 300 companies IC desgin houses in Taiwan. But, the designs are all less complex designs compared to what US companies are doing. Most of the companies in Taiwan are focus on developments only and the development cycle is only couple of months. In these couples of months, products like CPU can never developed. Most of the ICs are for PC and toys.
In Silicon Valley, big companies like AMD, Intel ........ can invest money and time into a project.... They can cook projects for years while a Taiwanese company will never do this. In these projects, there are many interesting complex problems being investigated and solved.
Back to the topic, I changed my plan from quiting engineering to continuous my career because of the nature of the project in US. In Taiwan, it is like you said. A dead end. I work with different products but it is the same procedure everytime. In US, I can work on things that I can only dream of... Maybe with this experience, I can get into a higher position if I have to move back to ASIA in the future.
The center of IC design is still not in Taiwan/China. Japan worked on it for many years, they are still not the center. Taiwan/China is famous in High Tech because they are the centers of production. All of the electrics products have "Made in Taiwan" or "Made in China" on it. But, it does not mean it is designed in Taiwan or China. Most of the high-tech workers there are solving mostly "production"-related problem. Production-related problems are important but I am not the kind of engineer who enjoys solving them.
I understand the nothing is impossible. I just hope and wish I am right about the CPU design. For Intel, AMd, and SUN, their CPUs are their identifications and they are their most heavly guarded assents. At least for now. I don't know how long this is going to be. But, I sincerely hope it last at least 3 years to come
