IDE/ATA 介面的先前標準使用 28 位元定址，這種定址不能識別大於 137 GB 儲存裝置。為克服此容量問題，大於此一容量的硬碟機採用了 48 位元定址系統在裝有更新控制器晶片、BIOS 代碼和作業系統 Service Pack 的新型電腦系統中可以支持這種定址系統。

Windows 98SE 和 Windows Me 可能需要使用 48 位元 LBA 支援的控制卡才能全識別更高容量的硬碟機。
