AMD to unveil 28nm Radeon HD 7950 by the end of January; Nvidia sets to catch up by April

AMD, after announcing 28nm high-end Radeon HD 7970 graphics card, is set to add a new 28nm member Radeon HD 7950 by the end of January, while Nvidia, considering the yield rates of the 28nm process and its inventory levels, plans to officially release its 28nm Kepler in April, at the latest, according to sources from graphics card makers.

The sources noted that Nvidia wishes to make sure that the power consumption and the manufacturing process of the graphics chip all reach perfection before entering the 28nm generation. Since Nvidia is set to release its 28nm graphics card around the same time as Intel's upcoming 22nm Ivy Bridge processor, the sources believe Kepler series GPUs may have a chance to catch up with the demand for Intel's new CPUs.

Nvidia is set to release several 28nm Kepler-based GPUs including GK104, which will replace the existing GeForce GTX 560Ti; GK107, targeting the entry-level PC market; GK106, targeting the mid-range to entry-level market; GK110, which is equipped with two GK104 GPUs; and the highest-end GK112, which may be released in the fourth quarter or 2013.

In addition to Radeon HD 7000 series for desktop, AMD, for notebooks, has also recently launched the Radeon HD 7000M series that includes four sub-series such as 7600M. In the second quarter, AMD is set to launch a 28nm, GCN structure-based notebook graphics card series including the Radeon HD 7900M/7800M/7700M.

The world of technology is really a series of chess matches between various rivals, each one making moves based on a playing board created by the other, all in an attempt to gain an edge and, if possible, declare checkmate (without running afoul of antitrust laws, of course). Two of the bigger participants are AMD and Nvidia, and to counter AMD's recent Radeon HD 7000 series launch, Nvidia may opt to release its upcoming GeForce GTX 680 graphics card a month early.

Chinese website ChipHell.com is reporting that Nvidia is pulling back the GTX 680's release from March or April and will launch the card sometime in February. It's nothing more than a rumor at this point, though ChipHell forum member Napoleon has a pretty strong track record when it comes to leaked information, VR-Zone says.

That said, the GTX 680 is supposed to offer similar performance to AMD's Radeon HD 7970, currently the fastest single GPU videocard on the planet. The card's clockspeed is rumored to be 780MHz, and is said to have 2GB of memory. It will be the first card based on Nvidia's 28nm "Kepler" architecture.
