就是寫成who the real author of the Elizabethan plays is commonly credited to William Shakespeare.

因為 who 是關係代名詞，不是疑問代名詞
疑問代名詞：
I don't know who he is.

關係代名詞：
The girl who is tall is a teacher.

其實我也不太會解釋文法，不過我的直覺就是這樣，因為我覺得像你那樣改寫感覺怪怪的

個人以為原本句子是由There is an unresolved controversy as to who is the real author of the Elizabethan plays "which are" commonly credited to William Shakespeare.省略which are來的，改成你說的以後意思會不太一樣喔。

我的直覺也是如此，兩者不同。

按照句子結構而言，這裡需要一個名詞子句作為主詞
而間接問句可以當名詞子句，直接問句文法錯誤

所以我認為樓主改的才合乎文法
而我同時以為原文並不合乎文法，
我想這才是樓主的問題所在

不過，英文母語者，會有更多生動的寫法
而我們所學的通常是比較規則的寫法

這句是錯的, 不論以文法的觀點來看, 或是單以整句的含意而言, 都不正確

其實最前面兩位已經解釋過了, 我再補充一點點

用文法來檢視, 我猜樓主也許是這麼看這一句的:
who the real author of the Elizabethan plays is commonly credited to William Shakespeare.
(譯: 伊麗莎白時代的戲劇真正的作者通常都認為是莎士比亞)
這樣解讀是錯誤的, 如果要照樓主寫的那句, 會讓人這麼看:
who the real author of the Elizabethan plays is commonly credited to William Shakespeare.
所以看得出來文法錯誤了吧? 這句不能這樣倒裝

不用文法, 單用含意來檢視:
who is the real author of the Elizabethan plays commonly credited to William Shakespeare.
(譯: 普遍相信是莎士比亞所著的伊麗莎白時代戲劇真實的作者是誰)
樓主的理解也是這樣嗎? 如果不是的話, 也難怪你會認為應該把句子重寫成像最上面深橘色那樣

這句為什麼沒有問號, 因為前面開頭的 There is an unresolved controversy as to [...], 所以它只是以肯定句在說 "關於那些普遍被認為是莎士比亞所著的伊麗莎白時代戲劇, 其真正的作者是誰, 其實一直有未解決的爭議"
再回去看看跟 "伊麗莎白時代的戲劇真正的作者通常都認為是莎士比亞" 意思是不是差很多?

除非你把句子的最後面切掉, 變成:
There is an unresolved controversy as to who the real author of the Elizabethan plays is.
(譯: 有關伊麗莎白時代的戲劇真正的作者是誰, 一直以來眾說紛紜)
在此例中, 你就可以把 is 放在 Elizabethan plays 的後面, 文法和含意都不會混亂

記得, "commonly credited to William Shakespeare" 如果要寫出來, 就一定是和 "the Elizabethan plays" 一起的, 中間不可以再穿插不屬於 "plays" 的動詞, 因為 "the Elizabethan plays ARE commonly credited to William Shakespeare."





簡單地來說, 這個爭議 (controversy) 是在 "戲劇真正的作者是誰" (who the real author of the plays is) 身上, 而不是在莎士比亞身上.
