Chipper's homer all Braves need to defeat Marlins

MIAMI (AP) -- The Atlanta Braves were delighted to get five shutout innings from Greg Maddux, and those five double-play grounders didn't hurt either.


The Braves' Greg Maddux hurls five scoreless innings in his season debut Friday.


Maddux looked sharp in his first start of the year, Chipper Jones hit a two-run homer in the first inning and defense did the rest as Atlanta beat the Florida Marlins 2-0 Friday night.


Maddux, activated from the disabled list before the game, allowed four hits and two walks and departed after throwing 76 pitches.


"Not too bad. Not too bad at all," said Maddux, a notorious perfectionist. "I feel pretty good about how I threw. It's pretty hard to complain when you don't give up a run."


A sore lower back sent him to the disabled list for the first time in his career and forced him to miss his opening day start.


"I can't even say he was rusty," Braves manager Bobby Cox said.


John Smoltz pitched out of a two-on, none-out jam in the eighth and finished for his second save in three chances. Mike Remlinger and Tim Spooneybarger worked one scoreless inning each in the Braves' first shutout.


"That's a good bullpen right there," Maddux said.


Aside from Jones' homer, rookie Josh Beckett (0-1) was just as good as Maddux. Beckett trailed 2-0 when he left after six innings with a blister on his right middle finger. He is not expected to miss a start.


Florida's Kevin Millar grounded into three double plays and flied out with a runner on first to end the game.


After setting a franchise low for attendance the previous two nights against Montreal, the Marlins drew 12,066 against the 10-time defending division champions.


The first three batters produced the only runs. Rafael Furcal led off with a walk, and Jones hit a fastball down the right-field line for his second homer of the season.


"It floated right over the middle," Beckett said. "A lot of these guys can hit fastballs down the middle."


The Marlins tied a club record by hitting into five double plays.


"That's why it's a pitcher's best friend," said Florida's Mike Lowell, who went 3-for-3 with a walk. "Five double plays doesn't help much. We had our chances."


The Marlins put at least one runner on in each of the first four innings, but three double-play grounders helped Maddux escape. After two walks by Spooneybarger to start the seventh, Millar grounded into a double play for the third time, this one turned by shortstop Furcal even though he stumbled.


Millar is 0-for-13 this season with runners in scoring position.


Smoltz entered after Florida's first two batters walked in the eighth. Andy Fox grounded into yet another double play, and pinch-hitter Luis Castillo struck out.


"You think of the save situation being in the eighth inning," Smoltz said. "I thrive on it. At the same time, I'm striving to get better every time out."

The win was Maddux's first since Aug. 22. He went 0-4 in his final seven starts last season. The three-time Cy Young winner improved to 13-5 with a 1.99 ERA in 25 games against the Marlins. He has 258 career victories.


"He doesn't look any different the older he gets," Marlins manager Jeff Torborg said. "He's just as effective as five-to-seven years ago. He's in great shape, a real good athlete and real smart. The guy's amazing."

Torborg was permitted to manage the Marlins pending a review of his two-game suspension.

NEW YORK (AP) _ Rafael Furcal, who had two errors the night before, drove in two runs with a triple and single Wednesday as the Atlanta Braves lost starter Greg Maddux early but ended a four-game skid with a 2-1 victory over the New York Mets.

Kevin Millwood, making his second relief appearance since 1998, threw four innings of two-hit ball after Maddux was forced out of the game after just one inning because of a recurrence of back pain.

Maddux, who started the season on the disabled list for the first time in his career, hurt himself covering first base on a bunt single by Timo Perez.

Millwood (2-1) relieved at the start of the second and gave up a run on a leadoff single by Mike Piazza, two walks and a sacrifice fly by Rey Ordonez. But it could have been more.

With Jeromy Burnitz on third base and two out, Mets pitcher Jeff D'Amico hit what appeared to be an RBI single to right field. But B.J. Surhoff charged the ball and threw D'Amico out at first base to end the inning.

The Braves tied it in the third when Henry Blanco singled and scored on a two-out triple by Furcal.

In the fifth, Atlanta took the lead when Marcus Giles singled, moved up on Millwood's second sacrifice of the game and scored on Furcal's two-out single.

Millwood turned the game over to Atlanta's bullpen in the sixth. Mike Remlinger pitched out of a two-on, one-out jam, striking out Burnitz and retiring pinch hitter John Valentin, who had a pinch homer against him in the first game of the series.

John Smoltz pitched two innings for his third save.

D'Amico (1-1) allowed seven hits in seven innings, striking out three and walking one for the Mets, who had won three straight.< ^Notes:@ Millwood was scheduled to pitch on Friday against Florida. ... NEW YORK -- After pitching the first inning, Greg Maddux was forced to leave Wednesday afternoon's game against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium.
According to Atlanta Braves trainer Dave Pursley, the four-time Cy Young Award winner aggravated a lower back injury while fielding a bunt by Timo Perez. One batter later, Maddux was forced to cover first base on an inning-ending double play. When he got to the bag, he landed awkwardly.

Maddux walked off the field without any apparent limp. But when it came time to start the second inning, he did not come out of the dugout.

The Braves veteran right-hander has been battling inflamed nerves in his lower back since the final weeks of Spring Training.

Inflamed nerves in his lower back forced Maddux to be placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 5 (retroactive to March 26) for the first time in his career. He missed two scheduled starts while he was on the disabled list.

Wednesday marked Maddux's second start of the season. He came off the disabled list on April 12 and threw five scoreless innings that evening against the Florida Marlins.

Maddux's injury forced Bobby Cox to use Friday's scheduled starter Kevin Millwood. His last relief appearance was Oct. 1, 2000 against the Rockies in Atlanta. Millwood, who threw five innings last Saturday, is working on three days rest.

Maddux will be further evaluated and his status will be determined following Wednesday's game.
